Eh, matelot.

Did you know it was possible to rent a paddle boat or a dragon boat in downtown Montreal?
Photos to come, pretty hilarious.

For now, here's a look for a sunny walk at the Canal Lachine!

First for Everything.

Leo.

In life, there's a first for everything.
Coming back from my travels wasn't and still isn't an easy task for me.
Especially since this blog was completely dedicated to Captain Leo's adventures throughout the travels that were suppose to last twice as long as what they actually lasted.

Since three months now, I realize that Montreal hides a lot more surprises than I could imagine. I'm not necessarily talking about the riots, but of all those little details that makes the city what it is.

While exploring those details, Captain Leo will transform into a blog of small scale discovery through looks.

Hoping that it will interest you as much,

Leo.

Yarr. [Part 2]

Joie.

Direction: Montréal.

Kelowna is one of the important cities of British-Columbia and is located in the Okanagan Valley at approximately five hours south by car of Golden. After a long and cold hour walk from the Greyhound drop off to the hotel accompanied by Yan, the evening finished beautifully and was very pleasant: walk downtown Kelowna followed by a sushi and fish dinner with good wine, everything paid by Work Safe BC.
The next day: Root Canal day. Oh my.
As slowly as I can, I start walking all the way to Kelowna’s endodontist center, located not too far from last evening’s restaurant, with a relaxing playlist on my i-pod ready for anything and my mental strength at minus fifteen, witch is pretty good considering that all the other times it probably was at minus a thousand. I take deep breaths and entere the office. They decide to take more X-rays, but this time in three dimensions. Afterwards, I am seated on the “death chair”.
I wait...
Still waiting...
...
....
The dentist enters at last, sits down next to me et breaths out loudly before saying: “Alright, so it’s worse than we thought.”
After his long speech about my tooth being completely fractured at the root in the bone and the fact there was no way to be saved, I asked only one question: “So, I am not getting surgery today?”
Answer: “No.”
Conclusion of Kelowna: Paid vacations by Worksafe BC and a futur dental implant.
Joy.

Direction: Montreal.

"G'day Mate."

Eh I thought about it, if you’re that miserable as an instructa’ why don’t cha come with us and be a lifty?”

Working in Kicking Horse seemed like one of the best ideas I have ever had when I applied last September. Now, I would say it was one of the worst idea I have ever had. I was hired as a ski instructor in a small team of twenty-five: eight snowboard instructors and seventeen ski instructors. Of all ages and levels, most of these instructors are returners in the snow school. Blending in the gang wasn’t the easiest thing to do let’s say. Top that with working six days a week between two and six hours a day with only one day off that you know of, watching everyone ski the beautiful fresh snow while you have to say : “Pizza, french fries, pizza!” over and over again... It is pure torture.
Luckily enough, a couple of my australian friends from the past two summers in Mount Buller work at Kicking Horse as lifties. One of them stopped me one day and said: “G’day mate! Eh I thought about it, if you’re that miserable as an instructa’ why don’t cha come with us and be a lifty?”
Whoa. Not a bad idea you got there.
After many rumours, useless judgements and comments and multiple paperwork to fill out, I am now a lifty. My job: bumping chairs for clients, shovel balconies and alleys, load clients’ skis in the gondola, etc. Seven days of work per two weeks, less if you find someone to cover your shift and ride breaks in your daily shifts. That’s what I am talking about! Since then, I am definitely happier, I ski way more, I work with happy people and I talk for a maximum of two minutes with clients.
Kicking Horse isn’t a workplace anymore, it’s a playground again.

Yarr. [Part 1]

Direction, Kelowna.

January 2nd 2012, morning like any other.
My alarm set at 7h30 starts playing “Funky Morning” as loud as it possibly could've. I know this tune by heart, it seriously annoys me. Then comes the unremitting morning war:
Snooze.
...
Funky Morning.
Snooze.
...
Funky Morning.
Snooze.
...
Funky Morning.
Snooze.
...
Funky Morning.
The worst part in this war is that the winner is always the same: Funky Morning. Five minutes per snooze equals to twenty long and precious minutes. Kids, violence doesn’t solve anything. It only brings you to not having time for breakfast before a big day of work.
After a rushed morning, I arrived at Kicking Horse for another day of instructing. I am then informed of my lesson: a private with an advanced/expert adult. Who could ask for more?! Awesome lesson, really friendly lady that was eager to learn and improve.
January 2nd 2012, end of morning not like any other one. In fact, I could have easily lived without.
We arrived at the top of a mogul run and I instructed my student to do a turn, stop and then to come and join me at the bottom. I make three turns before stopping in the middle of the run and telling her to start. And yes, she did go, that’s for sure. She was so committed to her turn that she ended up tumbling down head first and unlikely for me, I was standing a little bit too close to my student and received the edge of her ski that was still attached to her boot, her leg and her whole body, straight into my mouth.
Imagine the scene: the instructor spitting blood right in the middle of the slope, red snow all around her, a student screaming and saying sorry over and over again, a patroller giving a small gaze for the blood and continuing slowly his skidoo trip to the bottom. Yep, I skied all the way down with my student, a chipped tooth and a bloody mouth.
Conclusion: Both lips cut at several places and swollen like Angelina Jolie, half of the left front tooth chipped off and the front right tooth completely sent back in my mouth ( that I put back into place myself at the moment of the accident) that wiggles now.
After quite a few exams, my chipped tooth has been fixed and dentists came tot he conclusion that I was pretty lucky in this incident: a root canal should be enough to save the wiggly tooth. Only one thing: there is no such thing as an endodontist in Golden.
Direction, Kelowna.

No Name Village.

Bienvenue au No Name Village.

Cold mist falling on some icy and deserted streets: Welcome to Golden, British-Columbia. Must I say, a very warm greeting...
Located between the public library and the hospital, an old motel recycled into apartments: rusty pick-ups lined up in an alley infested of four-legged vermin (Also called stray cats.) where a lady soiled by time is shaking dust of her rug, covering up those filthy old mattresses and sofas abandoned next to the rubbish bags: Welcome to the No Name Village.
The bathtub's tap constantly running, the lounge room's cracked window with view on the emergency room helped with the help of the front door jammed frozen cooling down the whole apartment, the heating of this same room being deficient will definitely not solve the situation and  when you call a taxi or give your address to a friend for him to google map it, the address doesn't even figure in the data base of Google: Welcome to apartment n°31, your new home for the next five months
