"C'est À Tomber Dans Les Pommes." - Denis Leonard

10h16 - 3 bines pleines, smogo time*.
Mmm.
10h36 - Savoure ton petit biscuit.
13h00 - 3 bines pleines, lunch time.

Vous parlez donc français, right?

Bogan: "Mate, I don't undastand how ya can undastand that gal when she does that."
Francophone: "What do you mean?"
Bogan: "When she make does sounds mate! I don't get how ya'll can undastand eachotha, I mean if it's not aussie english I don't get how ya guys can undastand."
Francophone: "We were born with that language..."
Bogan: "That's bullshit, I don't undastand how yal can undastand that bullshit."

Never, but seriously never, I would've believed I would ever write in my resume in the section Working Experience: Apple Picker. Never. Hello, my name is Anne Isabelle Leonard, professional Apple Picker.

So, what is my day like?

7h00 - Get up.
7h50 - Walk through the paddocks to the farm next door.
8h00 - Get at the job, take your bag and wait for the tractor.
8h10 - Jump in an empty bin behind the tractor and drive to the orchard.
8h16 - Start picking: apple after apple in your bag, then empty it in the big bin.
10h16 - 3 full bins, smogo time*.
10h30 - Steal an apple for your snack, jump from the tractor and go make yourself a cup of tea.
10h35 - The cute little old lady offers you a chocolate cookie. Mmm.
10h36 - Eat the little cookie.
10h45 - The tractor comes back with new empty bins. Grab your bag and jump in, back to the orchard.
10h50 - It's on again.
13h00 - 3 full bins, lunch time.
13h05 - Steal an apple for your desert, jump down from the tractor and fall... eat your lunch.
13h55 - Back to the orchard.
17h00 - End of the day, after 4 more full bins and a smogo, head back to the house.

Good thing I love apples, tones of free apples. Yay!
I work mostly with locals, Benalliens (haha). Bogans. Through all these bogans, a French guy and Fine Arts student in Belgium. Messenger, angel... I don't know.

For the first time of my life, I was victim of racism. Not intensely, but just enough to make you uncomfortable.
What happened: The employer forbidden you to talk French if there are people around. Then one day, you're picking apples in a row only with another French speaker. So you speak French right? One of the locals comes to see you and tells you " to shut it and that they're sick of hearing blabbering in French".
Euh.... Really?
I can't stand Bogans anymore. I can't stand their terrible accent anymore, I can't  stand the odour of cigaret anymore, I can't stand their closed mind anymore, I cant stand racist comments anymore... Conversations like:
Bogan: "Mate, I don't undastand how ya can undastand that gal when she does that."
Francophone: "What do you mean?"
Bogan: "When she make does sounds mate! I don't get how ya'll can undastand eachotha, I mean if it's not aussie english I don't get how ya guys can undastand."
Francophone: "We were born with that language..."
Bogan: "That's bullshit, I don't undastand how yal can undastand that bullshit."
Yep... Not great.
Anyways, at least it's finish now. Today was my last day picking.
The calm beauty of the country is really nice, but I think a visit to the city will be good soon. Melbourne in two weekends. Until then, olive picking. Another interesting work experience to write in my CV.

Mon Nouveau Chez Moi.

Benalla, Victoria, Australie.    ...où ça?

[Population] : 14 000 .

Whoa. I’m in Australia.

Découverte musicale du moment, merci à mon coloc Bo Campbell: Jackson Jackson.
Groupe australien excellent, chanteur du band The Cat Empire.

Benalla, Victoria, Australie.    ...where?

[Population] : 14 000 .
[Length of the main street]: 500 m .

I live in a farm producing grapes, cherries, hay, wool... 1 200 acres of paddocks and gumtree forests, in the cutest little house that has only one heat source: the fireplace.
Yes, I have hot water and electricity.
Yes, I eat enough and even more than enough.
Yes, surprisingly,  I have wireless internet...

First challenge: live with four roomies, four aussie boys.
One veggie beach boy, a slightly hyperactive farmer, an electrician and father of a kid who loves to dance and an other calm and responsible guy.
Interesting mix that works wonderfully.

Second challenge: live with all the little creatures.
Mom, you wouldn't like this.
Let's say that my city life in Montreal didn't prepare me to live with frogs in the toilet or mice in the living room.
They say it's normal. I don't think we have the same definition of normal.

Living in a small in a small country town like Benalla made me discover the "Bogans".
What is a bogan?
It's an Australian with a really strong accent that generally lives in the country sides. They have a huge attachment to their country, so big that most of them never left it. It's really hard to explain with words. A good movie to watch to understand the concept of "bogan" would be "The Castle". Rent this movie, you won't regret it.

Amazing landscapes and sunsets, little bunny rabbits running everywhere, kangaroos hopping in the paddocks between cows and sheep, cockatoos screaming like the black dragons of the movie "Lord of the Rings" to wake you up in the morning... Whoa. I'm in Australia.

Musical discovery thanks to my roommate Bo Campbell: Jackson Jackson.
Excellent aussie band.
